Abstract:

Around 1990 it had become clear that long-term accessibility to audio and video documents can ultimately only be achieved by digital content migration from one preservation platform to the next. The IASA Technical Committee has published two documents, IASA-TC 03 and IASA-TC 04, which deal with the principles and the practical aspects of that preservation strategy.

However, preservation of the original carriers still plays a significant role, as important parts of the audio and video heritage still rest on their original carriers waiting for digitisation. Also, IASA-TC 03 strongly suggests to retain originals after content transfer to digital repositories for potential later consultation.

In order to survey recent recommendations, IASA-TC 05, Handling and Storage of Audio and Video Carriers, edited by Dietrich Schüller an Albrecht Häfner, has been published in 2014. The tutorial summarises how handling and storage can be optimised to preserve original carriers until professional long-term preservation can be organised and financed.
