Abstract:

An increasing number of large and complex archival institutions have undertaken large-scale survey and assessment projects designed to collect data on audiovisual materials in their collections which will assist them in better managing their obsolescence. Such surveys often span multiple repositories and administrative units that exist under a single institutional umbrella, and factors arising from this institutional context add complexity to the already complex task of audiovisual preservation. This panel brings together archivists from national museums, national libraries, public research libraries, and academic institutions to discuss and compare their experiences, strategies, outcomes, and lessons learned from carrying out these types of large-scale surveys. A brief synopsis of each panelists’ survey work, tools, and methodologies will be followed by a lightning round Q&A addressing strategies, impact, and lessons learned.

Panelists include Kelli Hix of the Smithsonian Institution, Will Prentice of the British Library, Evelyn Frangakis of the New York Public Library, and Joshua S. Harris of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The discussion will be moderated by Megan McShea of the Smithsonian.
