Abstract:

Most archives have valuable audiovisual material. Although this material has often not “commercial” character, it can be interesting for many people round the world.
The access to this material is often problematic because of practical, protection and copyright issues.
However there are easy solutions that can help with dissemination and exploitation of material, this way offering an extra income to archives by guaranteeing in parallel the protection and the avoidance of copyright infringement.
During the workshop we will show the practices that have to be followed, such as:

  • Digital content set up. (How the digital content of a music or video archive has to be set up, formatted and optimized properly, so that it reaches as many destinations as possible, in the most efficient and transparent way available).
  • Metadata and tagging: (Minimum necessary, Recommended for better distribution)
  • Making collections or “albums”. (Planning the collection, mastering, legal steps, artwork)
  • Organizing the Digital Distribution; the way of reaching the major online stores and digital services round the world.
  • You Tube music/video monetization
  • Licensing for TV, film, games, etc. (Synch Licensing)
  • Using Management System: In-depth daily, monthly, quarterly sales, reporting & analytics
  • Collecting or paying the neighbouring rights & publishing royalties
  • Protection from illegal file sharing sites
  • Promotion of material

Each case will be explained with examples from existing archives.
