Abstract:

From flat modelling to networked modelling, from a web of documents to a web of data, from information designed for human understanding to data designed for computer understanding: these are but some of the concepts that are frequently used to describe the change of paradigm the semantic technologies are bringing into the web.

However, what are the practical uses of the semantic technologies? What are the advantages of the semantic connection between data? How does the semantic web apply to the cataloguing models and standards? Does the semantic web help archiving institutions make their data more visible and interconnected?

This tutorial will aim to answer these questions and will explore the implications and applications of semantic technologies for archiving institutions and for their way of creating data.
