Abstract:

'Young India' label 78-rpm shellac discs were issued in India from 1935-1955. As the name suggests, this was an indigenous effort of producing gramophone records when major players viz. HMV, Odeon, Broadcast were already in the business with their discs in the market. With the technical help from Japan, a disc pressing factory was built in Bombay, India. "The National Gramophone Company" produced over 5000 titles in many Indian languages until about 1955. Over the years, the discs slowly disappeared and very few copies found home in private collections. In 2008-10, with the help and support of 'Endangered Archives Programme' (EAP) of the British Library, I digitized over 1400 songs from about 700 surviving discs. This poster describes the efforts and presents the findings and outcome of the work. The data includes examples of digitized copies of disc labels, catalogue pages and audio files.
